Anything goes…

Yesterday I went out for a photo walk during the afternoon. I got to admit I started a little uninspired, maybe because I just came back from a very long assignment or just because of the heat. The thing is though, I really wasn’t feeling it. As I walked along, trying to find a place or a thing I came across this two little boys, brother’s I presumed, playing together with what I can only think is little pebbles… Suddenly I was taken back to my own childhood. Anything was a potential toy and life is just less complicated…In a certain way, I am still like that myself…

Superhero (Indian Boundary Park Field-house Fire)

This superhero watches as The Indian Boundary Park’s Fieldhouse burns | Omar Robles- © 2012 Hoy.

As it appears in my bio, I am a physical actor as well as photojournalist. Well it had to come the day when the two careers would clash together. Today, I left for a rehearsal of an upcoming summer production. As I went out of the house i took my camera gear cuz it was a beautiful day and I wanted to head out for a photo-walk  after rehearsal. Our rehearsals took place(and I say took because clearly we are going to have to change location) at the Field-house of the Chicago Indian Boundary Park.

In the middle of rehearsal, Lori,  one of the cast members comes in and says…”hey guys, I just wanted to let you know that it smells like somethings is burning”. Immediately our director comes back through the door and says “the fire is in the building, get out ! As Lori and I later discussed, it was difficult to react because you are so used to hear people saying …”leave everything behind and just get out…” and as it turns out, you don’t really feel like leaving everything behind…actually the whole cast took as much as they could of their belongings as we left the building. Naturally the first thing I thought of taking with me was my camera to start shooting the incident.

Needless to say the whole experience was surreal and there is a lot I could comment on but for me, the experience was more about switching in a split second from actor to photojournalist. Kinda, sort of, ended up feeling like a superhero myself…at least for having to change from one “identity” to the other.

I will link up more images from the fire later….

La espera

Ah… sitting by the window and waiting. How many times, if not still today, do I sit and wait…or just ponder. I remember still the days where cell phones where just the fancy phone your father used for work and news from your far away friends came on regular mail. People used to sit down and wait like this by the window or next to the phone…and yet today we still wait but we are moving as we wait for news, emails and notifications that come through a mobile phone… cuz, well you just have to move and there’s not good enough a reason to ever stop…

Rantoul, IL

I caught this image while on assignment for  Hoy, a spanish publication from the Chicago Tribune Family.  Jeff Kelly-Lowenstein took me  along as we reported on the growth of Latino communities through-out the midwest. Jeff went to write several great pieces on subjects varying from  the value of labor to the fear in which many latinos live and work around and much more. I was in awe with the amount of work we achieved during those few days and the amount of stories we where able to bring to light, Jeff told the stories with the word while I told them with through the image…here is one of my photo essays form that trip.

How does this picture relate to any of the stories we covered then? Well it kind of doesn’t … I just had to ask Jeff to pull over for a second and he willingly complied for which I am grateful. Coming from Puerto Rico, this kind of barn scene it’s not something I am very used to so I kind of had to take this much back with me…You see, I was having my own Latino moment/experience or cultural clash of sorts….I was able to steal a couple  more artistic shots during that trip…

I love how the green grass it’s contrasted by the silver overcast skies. The barn, bridges these worlds with joint tonalities of both grey/silver and green…well, that’s just me. When I share these images I only wish others will be able to grasp a little of what I saw and perhaps take some of their own experience into it…cheers!

These boots weren’t…

Actually, for what it looks like these boots were in fact made for walking but apparently not doing a great job at it…  which is weird cuz one would say he probably paid a fair amount of money for, you know… walking boots… right? It does make me wonder however, where was this guy coming from or going to….? was it a long trip or a short one? The thing is though,  that he kept going on…bare feet and everything…that’s raw!

Yellow Purse

I live in a dream and I only speak through images…well that’s not true, whoever has met me, even for a short moment, more likely than not,he/she or it will tell you that I talk…A LOT. Photography is however one of the most eloquent forms I find I can express or share a feeling or a particular moment… A teacher once taught me that one of the biggest secrets of great photographers was that they show only their best images…I find my best images are the ones, which go beyond the technique, the images that take me somewhere and I don’t want to come back…and then I dwell in that dreamy state and I feel the image has said all the things I wanted to say.

Beautiful Silence

___

Silence … one last time it takes me, and well as every time he wears a smile and a look so ambiguous ….  I do not know if it’s heads or tails … everything I do know is that I let myself go again … and then, it’s still just as beautiful.
